A Green Political Philosophy
Working Toward a Future Beyond Left and Right

Green political philosophy seeks to overturn humanity's war against itself and Earth at the micro and macro levels. As it expresses itself in Green politics, means-and-ends interrelate; Greens understand their ecological responsibility, their accountability to their community and the future.

A Green becomes a Green by thinking and behaving"Green," not by political party affiliation, alone. Greens may belong to the Democratic, Republican, or Green Parties, since electoral parties are very narrow social structures within which to create needed social change. What makes a Green a Green are ideas like these, not a political party: The current state of affairs, society as it exists today and as it has existed for hundreds of years cannot sustain itself, and in the process of its decay it will destroy the conditions of life for untold millions of species-populations in the wild. Changing this state of affairs must occur for the benefit of humanity. It cannot be done overnight in one fell swoop; it must be done democratically from the grassroots up and peacefully (over several hundred years). Otherwise, any change is superficial and not likely to last.

To this end, the international Green movement works to create ecologically based, self-sustaining societies that run parallel with the existing corporate-bound societies; as they crumble in their own excess and waste, as the State withers in waste and corporate control, the emerging Green societies will be in place to help reduce the status quo's damage to humanity and other species-populations and habitat.

Unlike past societies based upon ideologies, ecology informs Green politics and is at the center of Green thinking. Ec ology as used by Greens is much broader, holistic, than in its scientific usage, although Green politics embraces the scientific application of ecology for the long-term survival of species-populations. Ecology comes to serve in social affairs, philosophy, art, and science in general, in its holistic usage. Ecology also reminds Greens of their species' duty, accountability to all spcies-populations on earth.

An ecologically aware population understands that it must have control over its environment; only at the grassroots can people make rational decisions for their bio-region's ecological needs -- no abstract governmental body can do this in any meaningful, long-term manner. "But getting to this form of life will take forever, and shouldn't a sense of urgency propel our efforts," one thinks in the face of world-wide, ecological destruction. In answer, Greens work on short-term incremental change as well as long-term issues. Greens understand that it is too late for tens of thousands of species in existence today. Greens seek to end this biocide, but in a lasting manner.

Also, to ensure ecological sustainability, Greens hope to forever change the agrarian and industrial revolutions, and authoritarian social hierarchies.

Regarding technology, Greens are not Pol Pot-like. They differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate technologies based upon ecological considerations, such as the sustainability of species-populations in the wild for at least ten thousand years.

Regarding political labels, Greens are not "conservative" or "liberal" or "environmentalists" in the usual meaning of these terms. Greens are for sure social libertarian, conservative and environmentalists in terms of tinkering with nature, and "liberal" in terms of representative social groups ---- in the Enlightenment sense of "liberal."

All of this amounts to a paradigm shift, a new model for existing ecologically on Earth. Again, Greens represent much more than environmentalism, liberalism or conservatism. In addition, the Green society will not be capitalist, socialist, or communist as we understand these economic models because they represent unsustainable growth economics that damage human and nonhuman ecological prospects.

Regarding the Green society, it will represent the creative energy of people who honor diversity in humanity and nature; free enterprise will earn and deserve the full support of society as a sibling to grassroots democracy. Capital will serve the interests of sustainability, conservation, appropriate technologies, and the ecological well-being of future humans and nonhuman species-populations, as well as civic education.
